Title: Unavailable Energy
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
This vibrant figurative painting with cadmium orange, raw umber and cerulean blue is full of energy and is painted on a canvas gessoed with deep brush strokes -creating a surface with movement. The viewer’s gaze is not allowed to connect with the figure’s gaze, due to the sunglasses blocking the line of sight toward the figure. However, the figure can presumably see the viewer. In science, “unavailable energy” is energy converted into a form that cannot perform work. Similarly, when we reserve our energy from others, we are not allowing it to be spent or dissipated on the gaze or opinions of others, but instead are reinvesting some of that energy into ourselves – to rebuild, renew, and grow.
Orange and blue create maximum color energy under color theory’s law of complementary color contrast, and the white, black and umber tones offset this energy with neutral tones for the figure.
Brush-varnished with UVL Gamvar gloss varnish.
