This surreal landscape features an abundance of micro-detail in the land and sky, which promises ongoing enjoyment with each viewing. The three Dorian columns stand as representations of resilience over time of elements and stress, with two of the columns bending a little to show the impact of weather and damage. These pillars are metaphors for the resilience of the human spirit under extreme conditions of trauma and difficult circumstances. The warmth of the light in this landscape suggests the “golden hour” when the sun warms a landscape just before setting in the evening, which is the most fleeting time of light during a day. This golden hour feels rich and hopeful, and the clouds breaking dramatically in the sky with a sprinkling of stars amid the light and dark purples and ultramarine blue tones also suggest a sense of hope. Perhaps the most magical part of this piece is that this landscape doesn’t exist anywhere in the world but is a new creation from Rachel’s own imagination.
