Size of Original: 13×19″ (cradle board 0.75″ deep)
An original Cut Paper work on cradled birch panel by Rachel, using 982 small pieces of up-cycled magazine paper from dozens of sources spanning several decades, adhered to birch panel with archival adhesive and varnished with UVL-blocking Gamvar gloss varnish, to prevent fading and ensure conservation museum standards. Sides of birch panel painted for frameless display, or may be framed for elevated display.
The moody lighting of the March 2022 Batman movie influenced the color palette and lighting elements of this piece, while the social isolation of a post-pandemic existence sets the undertone of the composition’s content. Three cityscapes blend together with a landscape and galaxyscape to form a surreal new setting, where the main character of the composition arrives in the foreground. The image has a dystopian and apocalyptic feel and offers a chance of relevancy and connection with a wide range of individuals, leaving the gender, ethnicity and other identifying human categories of the main figure covered with the mask and full body suit of a diver. The identity and purpose of the figure is a mystery, but the sense of a solitary experience and challenge factors are felt.
