An original Cut Paper work on stretched canvas by Rachel, using over 250 small pieces of paper, adhered to primed canvas with acrylic medium and coated with satin UVL varnish to prevent color fading. Sides of canvas painted for modern display, as shown.
This piece, created in April 2021, shows an open landscape with mountains, islands, and a sunset or sunrise. The size of the setting or rising sun is similar to the size of some of the stars in sky, where the sunset blends into the universe. Although there is no human figure in this piece, there is a suggestion of a figure being absent, with the foreground patch of melting snow in the bottom left corner being the place where a figure might have stood. In this area, some of the paper is cut to create a textural space of a missing figure. This piece is very personal, as Rachel’s son has promised to take her ashes on an adventure into a beautiful place like this after she has passed away, and celebrate her being free from the body that has been painful for her to inhabit in this lifetime.
