A highly textured abstract painting, in the genre of “white paintings” that some artists visit, “You’re White” is a reflection by Rachel of the most frequently-heard statement toward her since 2015. This racialized statement is never meant to empower or uplift, but always to erase her personhood and mock her identity, and sometimes to pressure her into not depicting black faces or figures in her art. With subtle off-white and pale blue tones whitewashed over with titanium white paint, the main imagery you’ll see in this painting is when direct light hits the surface and the vein-like textured forms cast shadows onto the canvas surface.
