“Contemplations” is a multi-media drawing, using ballpoint pen on paper, acrylic paint and a bit of collage. The main figure was drawn from life in a 15 minute session when I lived in Mississippi and stayed with a family in West Jackson. Sam Jr. was laying down watching tv and fell asleep on the floor, and I sketched him in 1998. I later did some studies of skulls on the same page of paper in my art journal. While recently reviewing my old sketches, I tore this page out of the journal and decided to finish it as a complete composition, since death and our mortal condition is an ever-present contemplation.
