This piece was initiated as a sketch in Rachel’s sketchbook, but the gestural qualities and feeling evoked by the scene stands on its own as a finished work of art. Charcoal sketching gives the figures character and texture, while thick application of red encaustic wax creates dimension and adds emotion. Reminiscent of the Crusades, the colonial era, war, and even the viciousness of online attacks in our modern society, acts of atonement, sacrifice and violence are threaded throughout the human experience.
