Aberration ~ ORIGINAL cut paper on canvas

Title: Aberration

Medium: Cut paper on Stretched Canvas

Dimensions: 16 x 20 x 1.5″

An original Cut Paper work on stretched canvas by Rachel, using about 1549 small pieces of paper, adhered to primed canvas with gloss medium and coated atop with gloss UVL varnish to prevent fading. Sides of canvas painted for modern display.

This surreal landscape features an abundance of micro-detail in the land and sky, which promises ongoing enjoyment with each viewing. The three gatherers in the field lean forward into the landscape, and the trees blow counter to their posture. A komodo dragon looks on, removed from the field by a rock outcropping. A teal butterfly and soft pink flowers contrast with the scaly skin of the dragon and suggest a tenderness that may connect with the people in the field. The komodo dragon is a representation of the alienation from society Rachel often feels, the experience of looking on from a distance and being a sort of unperson as people continue to live their lives and time passes. The butterfly is a metaphor for the artist’s spirit that remains hopeful and free despite her loneliness and segregation from jobs and society.
